A mould quotation is not based solely on the part’s external dimensions. Product geometry, material, production targets and the required mould functions are considered together. When comparing two quotations for the same part, check that they cover the same scope.

Main cost factors

  • Geometry: Deep cavities, undercuts and areas requiring moving cores affect the design and machining scope.
  • Cavity count: The number of parts per cycle, mould layout and production target are considered together.
  • Material and surface: Mould material, heat treatment, polishing and texturing requirements affect the quotation scope.
  • Trials and inspection: Sample quantity, measurement requirements and revision scope should be specified at the outset.

Separate mould cost from part cost

Mould investment and the unit price in series production are separate items. Part production considers material, cycle time, batch quantity and additional operations. The lowest mould price alone does not indicate the total project cost.

Prepare before requesting a quotation

  • Current 3D model and dimensioned technical drawing.
  • Product material and its technical data sheet, if available.
  • Initial batch and annual production target.
