Material Densities and Mass Calculation
Density is mass per unit volume. Specific weight is weight force per unit volume; it is a different quantity. The values below are for preliminary calculations. Alloy, additives, temperature and material grade can change the result.

Examples of pure metals
| Material | Symbol / product | Density (g/cm³) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | Al | 2.70 | RSC |
| Copper | Cu | 8.96 | RSC |
| Iron | Fe | 7.87 | RSC |
| Zinc | Zn | 7.134 | RSC |
| Titanium | Ti | 4.5 | RSC |
| Calcium | Ca | 1.54 | RSC |
Examples of specific plastic products
| Material | Symbol / product | Density (g/cm³) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| POM-C | TECAFORM AH natural | 1.41 | Ensinger |
| PA 6 | TECAMID 6 natural | 1.14 | Ensinger |
| PP | TECAFINE PP natural | 0.90 | Ensinger |
| PE-HD | TECAFINE HDPE natural | 0.95 | Ensinger |
| PTFE | TECAFLON PTFE natural | 2.15 | Ensinger |
Mass calculation
ρ is density, V volume and m mass. Plastic values refer to the named stock-shape products, not all injection-moulding grades. Use the technical data sheet for your exact material.
m = ρ × V
1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³
m [g] = ρ [g/cm³] × V [mm³] / 1000
Example: a volume of 10 000 mm³ and density of 1.41 g/cm³ give a mass of 14.1 g.
m = 1.41 × 10000 / 1000 = 14.1 g
For specific weight, using ρ in kg/m³ and g in m/s² gives γ in N/m³.
γ = ρ × g
