Machining Process Planning
Organize production from the engineering drawing through the operation plan, tool selection and first-article approval.

Inputs and traceability
Confirm part number, drawing/model revision, material, quantity, delivery date, tolerances and surface requirements. Include heat treatment, coating and subcontract operations. Link the program, tool list and inspection plan to the same revision.
Operation plan
Define machine, setups, datums, stock and operation order. Record tools and holders, overhang, cutting data, coolant and inspection needs for each step. Consider roughing and finishing allowances, intermediate checks and the effects of reclamping together.
Program verification
Checking the CAM toolpath alone does not prove that postprocessed NC code is suitable for the machine. Check stock, fixtures, tools and holder geometry, axis limits, work offsets, tool/offset numbers and safe approaches. A qualified operator performs the first run under the machine's procedure.
First article and production
Inspect critical dimensions and surfaces with suitable measuring equipment. Define acceptance criteria, inspection frequency, tool replacement limits and responses to nonconformity. Production is not accepted merely because a program runs; measurement results must be approved.
Troubleshooting and improvement
For long chips, poor surfaces, burrs or vibration, first examine clamping, wear and chip evacuation. Increasing or reducing feed or cutting speed is not a universal remedy. Make cause-based changes within manufacturer guidance and measure the outcome. Revise the plan using time, tool-life and scrap records.
Data management
Tool and fixture libraries, CAM templates and ERP/PLM records support repeatability. Choose an appropriate level of automation and assign responsibility for changes, checks and approvals. Iteration means evaluating results and revising the plan.
