Plastic Material Selection

Assess polymer family, commercial grade, operating conditions and manufacturing requirements for plastic components.

Plastic Material Selection

Define the component's job first

Identify loads, impact, friction, temperature, moisture, chemical contact, outdoor exposure, appearance and dimensional requirements. A short-term test value is not a continuous service limit. Price or polymer abbreviation alone cannot determine the selection.

Common thermoplastics

PE and PP families serve packaging, containers and technical parts. PVC is available in rigid and flexible formulations. ABS is used for housings, while PS serves rigid products and foams. Impact, UV and temperature behaviour depend on grade and additives.

Engineering and specialist materials

PA grades can suit wear and mechanical loading, but moisture may change dimensions and properties. PC can be a candidate for impact resistance and transparency, and PMMA for optical appearance. PTFE can suit low-friction and chemical-resistance needs; assess creep and processing separately. None offers unlimited resistance to all chemicals and conditions.

Other polymer systems

Phenolic, epoxy and unsaturated polyester resins are used in thermoset or composite systems. Silicones include elastomers, oils and greases, which do not share one processing method. A different system cannot simply replace material in a process designed for thermoplastic injection moulding.

Compare the technical data sheet

Read the exact grade code, filler/fibre content, density, flow, shrinkage, mechanical and thermal properties together. Check whether results use dry or conditioned specimens and which test conditions apply. Where food-contact, electrical or flame performance is required, verify suitability for the particular grade, thickness and use.

Validate against mould and process

Assess wall thickness, gating, weld lines, shrinkage directions, mould temperature and drying requirements. Specify chemical identity, concentration, duration and temperature together. Confirm selection with trial production and service-condition tests; stock-shape data do not automatically apply to an injection grade.
