Bearing Selection

A practical checklist for selecting rolling bearings by load, speed, arrangement, life, fit, lubrication and operating conditions.

Bearing Selection

Bearing Selection

There is no single bearing type for every application. Define the shaft and housing arrangement, available space, load direction and magnitude, speed, operating hours, environment and maintenance plan before selecting a bearing.

Load, speed and life

Separate radial and axial loads, including shock or changing loads. Check the required speed and calculate rating life using the applicable bearing-manufacturer method and load spectrum. Use the manufacturer’s catalogue for limiting speed and capacity.

Arrangement and installation

Choose a bearing arrangement that supports the shaft while managing axial location and thermal expansion. Verify shaft and housing fits, internal clearance, alignment, seals and lubrication. Mount using the prescribed method and avoid transmitting force through rolling elements.
